Our Tow Behind Vehicle

We wanted a vehicle, that we could tow behind HQQTIE, so that we would have a nimble vehicle to do groceries and go exploring.  There are a few ways to tow a vehicle.  One is on a trailer, which is fine if you are only going to your winter destination.  The next is a dolly that carries your front end off the ground but is another whole extra piece of equipment to get in the way.  The way we went is to tow flat with all four wheels on the ground.  This set up is great in that you can just unhook and go.  But it is the most expensive and the most labor intensive to set up.  Once you have the set up installed then it is easy.  Jeeps are the number one RV tow behind vehicle in the country and therefore all the parts are easy to come by.

You need to install the tow hitch base plates, the brake away safety line and wiring harness between the motor home and jeep.

You need to have the tail lights and blinkers on the Jeep come on when driving.  So you need to add in auxiliary wiring from the motor home to the Jeep’s lights. To protect your Jeep wiring from stray voltage you need to add diodes to isolate the Jeep from the motor home’s signals while still allowing the Jeep to function normally when unhooked.  The motor home supplies the power to the tail lights and blinkers.  The Jeep supplies the power to the brake lights.

You need to have the brake pedal on the Jeep physically depress to activate the jeep’s brakes when the motor home brakes. And since the Jeep isn’t running the power brakes don’t work.

To fix both those problems you need to add a compressor that hooks into the vacuum line and charges the brakes as well as activate a piston and pulley system that actually pulls down your brake pedal.

Now since the Jeep isn’t running there is no charge going to the battery to replace the draw that the compressor and brake lights are using.  So you need to add a charging line from the motor home to the Jeep battery.

There is a lot to set up.  Since this vehicle might get a lot of dirt and dust thrown at it, we were going to get a used Jeep, but they were really expensive.  So for just a little more we bought a new one.  But since we plan to keep our Jeep a while it was a simple choice.  I did all the install myself to keep the cost down but also to know the system if any problems arise during our travels.
